Sea Operations Fellow


DIRECT SUPERVISOR: SEA OPERATIONS MANAGER

The Sea Operations Fellow will serve alongside the Sea Operations team who trains staff in water safety, which is critical in missions work around the world. He or she will learn about water travel safety and vessel operations from experts in their field and assist in performing maintenance on small vessels and in other mechanical and repair projects as needed. He or she will assist in creating virtual training materials to complement existing traditional training modules, work together with the Communications department to develop promotional media, and plan events to engage the public.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop public events and promotional media for Sea Ops programs by serving as the liaison with JAARS Communications department (videography, social media, update website presence, content for blog) 
  • Help train pre-field and furloughing members in maritime safety
  • Collaborate in adapting maritime training material into virtual format
  • Learn and assist in routine and preventative maintenance on vessels, hands-on marine applications, mechanical work, vessel repair/refit projects if needed
  • Gain experience in boat operation, including pre and post trip procedures, trailering 
  • Gain experience and firsthand knowledge of field programs from a possible overseas Vision trip (serve as hands-on crew in field operation and observe management and safety)
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by manager

  • Versatility (Being able to go from Video editing, to working in a mechanical setting)
  • Have certification or be prepared to take CPR/First Aid, LifeGuard certificate, if possible (JAARS sponsored)
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand

  • Collaborative

Preferred

  • Experience with e-learning platforms and learning management systems
  • Majors including: Maritime Maintenance, Maritime Safety Management, Maritime Transportation Studies, Occupational Safety, Outdoor Education, Communications, Web Design and Social Media
  • Boating experience
  • Boater Safety Course Certificate 
  • Safety Awareness
