Transition: Lesson 4

Keep it REAL: Explain

REAL Activities and video have been used with the permission of Anchor Education.

The video may not be copied but is available from margaretstockwell@hotmail.com  at a very low cost.

The Importance of "Explain"

Explaining why you have to leave is not always easy, especially if it’s someone you like to spend time with and it may be a while until you see them again – or you are not sure you will see them again. There are people who have made your life special, friends and family members who love and care for you.

Make sure you have time to say thanks to people who have helped you. These may be different from the ones parents think about and it is good to make sure you think about who you need to thank. It is good to thank people properly so there are no regrets later in life.

Help your child fill out the following worksheet: ICC for Children REAL Explain Worksheet

Using the list of emoticons at the end of the worksheet, ask your child(ren) to practice explaining how they feel about leaving.

The aim is to help children learn how to explain the reasons and feelings surrounding their move and to create a list of people they want to thank and/or explain to before leaving.
