Missionary FAQs

Do missionaries get paid?
Yes, missionaries do receive a paycheck and manage their finances just like anyone else—they have bank accounts, budgets, and financial responsibilities. However, how that paycheck is funded can vary.

Some missionaries receive support through their church or a sending organization, while others may serve out of personal retirement income or other resources. At JAARS, most of our missionaries serve through partnership development. This means they build a team of ministry partners—individuals and churches—who give financially, pray faithfully, and stand with them in their calling.

JAARS processes these tax-deductible gifts, ensures financial accountability, and provides resources and support so our staff can focus on the mission: making Bible translation and language development possible in the most remote places on earth.
Are there any salaried missionary roles?
Absolutely. While most positions at JAARS are filled by individuals who raise support, we do offer some salaried roles depending on the position and funding availability. Our goal is to place the right people where God is calling them—whether through support-raised roles or direct-hire opportunities—so that together we can go the last mile.
How do missionaries raise support?
At JAARS, we encourage our staff to build a ministry team of partners who will participate in the mission through personal relationships and prayer as well as through financial partnership. One-on-one conversations, small group presentations, and regular communication such as newsletters or updates are all effective ways of building such a team.

We provide training, tools, and coaching to help each missionary grow in confidence and clarity as they build their team. Through this process, God often deepens their faith and expands their community in incredible ways.
Is support-raising biblical?
Yes! Throughout Scripture, we see examples of God’s people being invited to partner in ministry through giving and prayer. Jesus was supported by others during his earthly ministry (Luke 8:1–3), and Paul regularly invited the churches he planted to support his ongoing mission (Philippians 4:15–19).

At JAARS, we view partnership development as a deeply spiritual process—an invitation for others to join in what God is doing to bring his Word to the ends of the earth.
What does JAARS provide to help missionaries succeed?
