What does transplanted mean?

What qualities would help a plant thrive in a new place? (strength, flexibility and adaptability would be some – can you think of additional qualities)

Are these the same things that would help people as well?

In what ways are we like plants that are being transplanted when we move to another location?

How can we thrive when we move?

As you listen to the story, think about the characters and how they were being transplanted.

After Viewing

Who in the story had the most difficulty with the move? Why do you think it was harder for this person?

Mama. Mama had always lived in the same house with her family. Now she was moving far away to a grass soddie.

What was different for this family and especially Mama? How do you think they felt?

The family and especially Mama may have had some cultural stress/shock.

A definition is: “Culture shock is the feeling of uncertainty, confusion, or anxiety that people experience when visiting, doing business in, or living in a society that is different from their own.”

Think back to what we said about being "transplanted." How were the characters in the story being transplanted?

Mama’s roots were deep and her transplanting was the most difficult. Dad was excited about the move and the possibilities for his family. Zoe saw what her dad saw but she was worried about her mom. Rebecca missed the trees and her grandparents. The girls and dad were finding being transplanted easier than mom.

Dandelions Craft

We are going to make our own Dandelions! There are two versions of this craft to accommodate for the materials you have on hand; choose whichever version is best for you and your family.

Option 1:

Needed:

Yellow tempera paint or strong water colors
Scissors
Base paper
Green paper for stem or crayons to draw stems
Glue
Plastic forks

Assembly: Make a dandelion craft using a fork and some paint! Cut and glue stem to base paper; dip fork in paint and create a dandelion. Let dry.

Option 2:

Needed:

Colored construction paper or white paper
Glue
Scissors
Small paper plate or 6 inch circle
Green construction paper

Assembly: Cut a stem for the dandelion out of green construction paper or draw a stem on the blue or white paper. Cut a fringe around the paper plate or 6 inch circle and glue it onto the paper. Glue plate or circle to base paper.
