Land Operations Fellow


DIRECT SUPERVISOR: DIRECTOR OF LAND OPERATIONS

The Land Operations Fellow will serve alongside the Land Ops team who serves, supports, and trains staff in land travel safety, which is critical in missions work around the world. He or she will learn from experts in their field, assist in performing preventive and routine maintenance on JAARS operations vehicles, and conduct off-road skills and safety courses for those preparing to go overseas and for partners in overseas locations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Become proficient and competent in driving in an 4WD and motorcycle off-road environment including safely utilizing recovery equipment to extract stuck vehicles, identifying potential trail hazards/obstacles, and safely traversing/overcoming obstacles preventing damage to the vehicle
  • Train to be an off-road driving/motorcycle instructor to then assist and conduct the 4WD safety and recovery course and motorcycle off-road course that present a real-world perspective, provide hands-on vehicle maintenance, and teach safe driving techniques
  • Perform administrative activities associated with the effective management of shop operations, including compiling, storing, and retrieving production data for reports, maintaining digital records of vehicle repairs, and planning periodic preventive maintenance such as oil and filter changes 
  • Diagnose vehicle problems, discuss nature or extent of malfunction with supervisor to determine best possible solution, then reassemble to manufacturer’s specifications
  • Examine parts for wear or defects, diagnosing whether reconditioning or replacement is necessary for reliable, safe vehicle operation, replace parts such as water pumps, alternators, starters, compressors brakes, and tires, and place vehicle on ramps or hydraulic lift to gain access to mechanical components as needed
  • Attend off-site team building trips to other off-road areas, possibly with 4x4s clubs or motorcycles events
  • Gain experience and firsthand knowledge of field programs from a possible overseas vision trip (serve as hands-on crew in field operation and observe management and safety)
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Director

  • Associates or Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

Preferred

  • Working experience with Google Workspace (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Forms, etc.) and Microsoft Office
  • Experience in detailed record keeping 
  • Motorcycle endorsement on driver’s license
  • Prior off-road 4WD and/or motorcycle riding experience
  • Basic to intermediate experience with hand and power tools in a shop environment
  • Majors include: Vehicle Mechanics, Engineering, Physics, Business, operations and Logistics Management, Operations Management
