JAARS-trained pilots currently operate two Helio Couriers in the Philippines—one on the island of Luzon, the other on Mindanao.

Together, these aircraft provide flights to translators and support personnel throughout the Philippines. In addition, our pilots also perform emergency medical evacuations; assist in disaster relief; and provide flights for government agencies, other mission organizations and local citizens.

Terrain

More than 7,100 islands make up the Philippines, dotting the Pacific Ocean with rice terraces and volcanoes, palm-fringed coastlines and fertile valleys. Tropical rain forests blanket many of the islands, as do statuesque mountain ranges. The country lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire and experiences frequent volcanic activity and earthquakes.

Many of the Philippines’ lesser-known language groups live on remote islands or deep within the country’s rain forests—hours from the nearest roads or public transportation. Over the years, air transportation has played a key role in reaching these language groups.

Translation and Literacy Work

The Philippines is home to more than 170 language groups, ranging from 17 speakers to nearly 17 million. Many of the country’s lesser-known language groups have lived in relative isolation for centuries, preserving their distinct languages and cultures.

Translation and literacy work have thrived in the country for more than 55 years. To date, Scripture portions have been published in 57 Filipino languages. SIL International (SIL) is currently involved in roughly 55 language development programs, many of which are led by Filipinos.

In addition, SIL has published more than 3,500 books and articles in and about Filipino languages. In cooperation with the Philippines Department of Education and other organizations, SIL also works to promote literacy, health initiatives and community development projects.
