Three Pilatus PC-6s are operated by JAARS-trained pilots in Southeast Asia, where our aviation partner YAJASI provides service to dozens of translation teams and Christian mission organizations. The region hosts one of the most rugged landscapes on earth, from regal mountain ranges to forested islands, and requires equally rugged aircraft—such as the PC-6.

These aircraft boast greater speed and load capacity than YAJASI’s Helio Couriers, yet are capable of operating on runways just as short. They can also accommodate 10 passengers—twice the amount of Helio Couriers—and run on readily available jet fuel. However, the aircraft have a relatively limited range of flight between refuelings.

These aircraft are often used to:

  • Transport personnel to and from remote villages.
  • Provide flights to the local government and citizens.
  • Perform medical evacuations.
  • Transport produce from remote villages for community development.

Definitions

Payload: The amount an aircraft can carry, in pounds, in addition to the pilot and fuel. Calculations are based on three hours of fuel for airplanes and two hours of fuel for helicopters.

Range: The maximum distance an aircraft can travel between refuelings, assuming it takes off with full tanks and lands with one hour of reserve fuel. For helicopters, calculations are based on 30 minutes of reserve fuel.

Takeoff Distance: The distance in which an aircraft can safely take off, calculated at gross weight and sea level.
