Chad is a landlocked country in Central Africa. It is home to over 200 different ethnic and linguistic groups, including those speaking Arabic and French, the official languages. Islam and Christianity are the most widely practiced religions.

The United Nations Human Development Index ranks Chad as the seventh poorest country in the world, with 80 percent of the population living below the poverty line. Their livelihood is supported by subsistence farming and raising livestock. It is difficult to comprehend what life must be like for a Chadian.

Roads outside the cities are in ill repair, and public transport is limited. SIL International has been working in this difficult region with the Chadian Association for Literacy, Linguistics and Bible Translation (ATALTRAB). To reach field projects, they need a reliable four-wheel-drive (4WD) vehicle.

A 4WD vehicle will enable ATALTRAB to better:

  • supervise Bible translation and revision
  • offer literacy classes
  • mobilize churches and communities

Many groups in the south of Chad are asking for help in translation and revision projects, but without adequate transportation, ATALTRAB is not able to address all of their needs. This 4WD vehicle will greatly improve ATALTRAB’s ability to assist translation groups, enabling them to finish their work.
