3D Animation for Sign-Language Scriptures
Get Involved
Your gift will help provide 3D animation software that can be used to create high-quality animations of sign-language Scriptures.
To date, most sign-language Scriptures are presented via video recording of a human signer. But this production methodology is fraught with difficulties:
- Videos can be expensive and time-consuming; even minor changes require re-recording.
- Individual signers may change in appearance or stop working on the project.
- Translations may be rejected due to the signer’s denomination or reputation.
- Signers may not participate due to security concerns or fear of being identified with the message in some parts of the world.
The WordSign project team is developing 3D animation tools for the production of high-quality, sign-language videos. Once complete, these tools can be used by Deaf and hearing teams working with partners like SIL International, D.O.O.R. International, and the United Bible Societies.
The project’s motion capture software will automatically track a signer’s movements, converting them for use in a realistic 3D animation. WordSign is also developing a production editing environment built on top of Maya, an industry-standard commercial 3D animation program, that will allow teams to customize the final animation.
By partnering with JAARS you can help provide the resources necessary for the programming, travel, equipment, and supplies needed to complete development and delivery of this software. As a result, many Deaf will have powerful tools for bringing Scriptures to life in their own language.
