Backup Power System in Côte d’Ivoire

When the lights go off and the computers go down at the SIL International offices in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, workers congregate outdoors or in the lobby.

They talk about the projects they were trying to finish—balancing the budget, perhaps, or organizing literacy and health workshops—and worry if any work was lost during the outage.

In the last few years, Abidjan’s power system has rapidly deteriorated. Unexpected power cuts often occur, and because the center has no backup power system, many pieces of equipment have been damaged.

By partnering with JAARS, you can help provide a backup power system, which will:

  • Allow people to work despite power cuts.
  • Prevent the loss of valuable data.
  • Protect equipment during outages or power surges.
  • Enable workshops and meetings to continue without interruption.

As a result, linguistic and administrative work can continue in Côte d’Ivoire, unhindered by constant power outages. And, ultimately, thousands of Ivoirians will have the opportunity to read and write in their own language—impacting their lives forever.
