Ancient Alphabets
Map of Mesopotamia and Sumer, where writing began.

The text on the plaque reads:

"In the earliest cities, life became complex. Constant misunderstandings made it necessary to write things down.

"So, writing began in Sumer about 51 centuries ago. Starting as a way of keeping records, it soon became adequate for expressing all ideas as accurately as spoken language."
