Work Teams at Dibagat

Nard Pugyao, a pilot-mechanic who is now working in the Public Relations Department at JAARS, and Sandy, his wife, spearheaded a major effort in the Philippines from March until June 2001. They coordinated four work teams that lived and worked in Dibagat, Nard's home village in the northern part of the country. The initial team's first project was to rebuild an old airstrip. And all the teams participated in building a house for translator Rudy Barlaan. In all, 58 people from 10 states participated. Two of the teams were led by JAARS folks, Rick Pfizenmaier and Mike Edwards.

Rudy, whose first language is Pangasinan, helped Dick Roe translate the Isnag New Testament. It was first printed in 1982. Over the years there were 4,500 copies printed for approximately 35,000 Isnag speakers. Now, before more New Testaments can be printed, a revision needs to be done.

Dibagat is 13 hours by ground from the SIL center in Bagabag and only 55 minutes by Helio Courier. Completion of the airstrip provides easier access to Dibagat, and, from the new house, Rudy will be able to work on the NT revision. The house will also provide a central place for the Isnag video ministry and Scripture distribution.

The airstrip was officially opened April 5 when pilots Brian Graham, David Ramsdale and Ken Van Weerdhuizen checked it out. Then others were flown in April 11 and 12 for the Easter Bible Conference in which 100s of Isnag people participated.

The first work team in Dibagat completed the rebuilding of the airstrip.
