Vision 2025 and JAARS

Wycliffe Bible Translators has made significant progress since its founding in 1934. Over 700 New Testaments have been published and work is underway in about 1,300 other languages. But over 2,200 more language groups still need Bible translation. At the current rate of completion, it will take another 150 years for all people in the world to have some Scripture in their own language.

In 1999, the Wycliffe organizations embraced a new vision: “that by the year 2025 a Bible translation project will be in progress for every people group that needs it.”

The vision statement goes on to say, “We acknowledge that this cannot be accomplished simply by our working harder or doing more of what we are now doing. … Our desire is to build sustainable Bible translation programs and Scripture-use activities. Therefore, we urge each entity within our family of organizations to give priority to strengthening partnerships, forming additional strategic partnerships, and working together to develop creative approaches to each context.”

Recently, JAARS President Jim Akovenko noted, “Our international sister organizations, perhaps more than ever before, are seeing the need for JAARS services in support of Bible translation. They have issued mandates that will increase our involvement through communications, technology and transportation support. The challenge before us now is to meet their increased expectations.”

Vision 2025 has motivated us toward greater achievement. But only with God’s guidance and direction, power and protection, will we see this great vision fulfilled. Prayer is a vital component of this effort. JAARS needs people who will pray, participate in the work, or provide the extra funds needed to support our expanding role. We are trying new things, and looking forward with anticipation to seeing what God is going to accomplish through this great new vision.
