College Internship Opportunities

 
Summer 2005 IT Interns Through close partnership with Wycliffe Bible Translators and others, JAARS provides quality technical support services and resources to speed Bible translation for all people. JAARS is interested in providing internship opportunities for college students who have an interest in technology and Christian missions.
 

Purpose:

 
To provide an opportunity for college students interested in missions to:
  • Continue to develop their skills and knowledge.
  • Contribute to the work of God’s Kingdom.
  • Broaden their vision of the needs of the Bibleless people of the world.
  • Learn how they can fit into missions long term.
 

Qualifications:

 
  • A personal relationship with Christ.
  • In agreement with the Wycliffe doctrinal statement.
  • A serious interest in missions.
  • Studying in the field of the internship.
  • Eighteen years old or older.
  • Adequate health insurance coverage.
 

Areas of Opportunity:

 
  • Aviation Maintenance—Mechanics with an FAA Airframe & Powerplant certificate can gain practical mission aviation experience assisting JAARS Aviation in inspecting, servicing, and repairing aircraft and engines being used at the JAARS Center and our overseas operations. (Read testimonies of Aviation Interns.)
  • Construction and Maintenance—Masonry, electricity, carpentry, automobile maintenance, plumbing, air conditioning.
  • Information Technology—examples of past intern projects:
    • Assisting in the development of CBT training modules.
    • Research on various Intranet Providers, evaluation and analyses on vendors’ responses to our RFPs.
    • Building web front-ends for database projects.
    • Access programming for business systems.
    • C++ and C# programming for linguistic-related software development.
    • Setup/Testing/Check-out of new computers bound for the mission field.
    • Research/evaluation of various Internet-based computer training sites.
    • Work on the On-Line Donation site that you see on the www.jaars.org website and to make it functional.
    • Phone/email/walk-in computer support.
    • Research and development for Speech Analysis Tools in the wavelet decomposition field.
    • IT/Enterprise Architecture modeling.
 

Intern Responsibilities:

 
The responsibilities of interns are these:
  • Work a 40-hour week.
  • Fulfill the assignment as outlined in the job description to the best of his/her ability.
  • Take advantage of opportunities to expand his or her knowledge of missions by participating in events and relating with field-experienced personnel at JAARS.
  • Submit periodic progress reports to his or her supervisor.

Length of internship — Normally 8 weeks during the summer. Aviation internships may be any time during the year for longer periods of time.

Location — Most intern opportunities are at the JAARS Center in Waxhaw NC, but occasionally there may be opportunities at the Wycliffe centers in Orlando and Dallas (IT only) or overseas.

Remuneration — Interns will be paid minimum wage.

Intern candidates who do not need remuneration (e.g., they may be sponsored by their church) may be invited to come as volunteers.

Non-U.S. citizens, please note: JAARS cannot offer compensation or subsidies of any kind to a non-U.S. citizen who is not legally allowed to work in the U.S.

Housing — Interns are responsible to cover the cost of their own housing, which is available on the JAARS Center. The most economical housing arrangement is to spilt the cost of a multiple-bedroom apartment with roommates. For stays of less than 90 days, a 7% North Carolina sales tax applies.
