At the Service of the People

First JAARS aircraft, the Grumman Duck. Amauta, an Inca word meaning “a wise man at the service of the people,” was the name given to the first JAARS airplane.
The amphibious Grumman Duck served well in the jungles of Peru, but it was soon evident a light aircraft was also needed to navigate the shallow headwaters of the rivers where many language groups lived. Larry Montgomery, JAARS first full-time pilot, recommended a 145-hp four-seat Aeronca Sedan, much favored by bush pilots in Alaska and Canada.

Soon two Aeroncas and a larger eight-passenger Norseman, were put on floats and added to the fleet, then two more Ducks, acquired at bargain prices, and a PBY Catalina flying boat. With these airplanes and additional pilots, the aviation program moved into high gear.

Cameron Townsend, however, was praying for still another plane, one that could cruise at varying speeds for surveys and emergency flights and land on small, muddy airstrips.

In 1955, while in the States on furlough, he watched a demonstration of a new type airplane called a Helio Courier. Amazed, he saw it take off at a sharp angle, almost hover in flight and land in an unbelievably short space.

Today Helio Couriers represent about half of he JAARS fleet. Before his eyes his prayers were answered in detail. Here was a fixed-wing airplane that could fly safely and under full control at the astonishingly slow speed of 30 mph, with a top speed of 140 mph. It needed very little space for landing and takeoff and had none of the drawbacks that helicopter operations posed in those days.
Later that fall, in spite of a serious lack of funds, JAARS took delivery of the first of what would become the most serviceable plane of the fleet.

Today, JAARS operates 10 Helio Couriers. Every addition to the program through the years was provided by God to meet a specific need. Along with the planes came skilled new recruits to fly and maintain each aircraft.

Veteran pilots have passed on their knowledge at each intensive training and orientation program for pilots and mechanics. The result has been a blessed history of safe and time-saving air travel, over some of the most difficult flying locations on the globe.

In the tradition of the first airplane, JAARS Aviation continues to be Amauta, “a wise man at the service of the people.”
